Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Information Systems and Decision Sciences.

Today's business environment requires companies to collect up-to-date business information from their customers, competitors, and business partners, and more importantly, analyze this information by using advanced tools and technology. Firms that do not possess these capabilities will fall behind in the highly-competitive and quickly-changing business environment. Therefore, more and more employers are recruiting business professionals who possess quantitative and analytical skills.

The mission of our Department is to prepare our students to meet technologically sophisticated tasks in the various business disciplines. Our Department teaches quantitative analysis, operations management and management information systems courses that enable our students to make intelligent decisions by utilizing the current knowledge and technologies.

Further, we offer undergraduate and graduate Information Systems (IS) concentrations:

Members of our faculty possess impressive academic and industrial credentials, excel in teaching, and provide personal advising services to our students. In addition, they make significant contributions to the professional and research communities with high-quality consulting work and research.

Feel free to contact me for further questions about our Department or programs. Thank you for visiting our Departmental homepage.

Best Regards,

K. Paul Yoon, Ph.D.

What is Information Systems (IS) concentration?

"To be successful, businesses need what is still too rare; managers knowledgeable about both technology and business" MIT Technology Insider.

It is not surprising that successful firms possess adequate information management capability (human and technology) as one of its core abilities. IS is a multidisciplinary field of study that integrates concepts and frameworks from numerous related areas – including computer science, information technology, management science, and psychology – to help firms boost productivity derived from the effective utilization of informational assets.

The IS concentration prepares students to be effective users and managers of information technologies/systems in technology-enabled organizations (business firms). It provides students with practical knowledge and skills in the integration of management and technology in the various business disciplines.

In specific, graduates will be able to

  • use application software packages as business problem-solving tools,
  • understand and use the Internet technology for e-business,
  • design and maintain the information infrastructure of organizations, and
  • develop information systems in alignment with organization’s strategy.

We offer an Information Systems concentration within the B.S. and M.B.A degrees in Management.
