The Creative Writing major provides students the opportunity to learn the art and technique of writing in a variety of forms and styles. With a skilled and widely published faculty, the department offers beginning and advanced courses in fiction and poetry, along with courses in a range of other writing disciplines, such as creative non-fiction, article writing, critical writing and reviewing, and persuasive writing.
Courses in playwriting and screen writing are available from the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. Students may specialize in fiction or poetry. To develop familiarity with models of excellence, each student's program includes courses in modern and contemporary literature, genres, and literary periods. The program culminates in a senior writing project.
The department's writing faculty has published novels, short story and poetry collections, and many stories, poems, essays, and reviews in leading literary magazines. Their professional writing experience includes literary criticism, feature articles, journalism, public relations, advertising, and business and technical writing. Most also teach in the department's Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program
Selected works of student fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction receive Internet publication on the Fairleigh Dickinson University creative writing site on Web del Sol.
Students in creative writing have established an international on-line journal of creative writing--Sphere--and serve as readers and editors.
Writing students have the option of applying for positions as editorial interns for The Literary Review, learning manuscript evaluation, copy editing, and publication production. They also may seek off-campus interships in various writing and publication fields, and they have opportunities to work on student publications.
Creative Writing majors are encouraged to minor in or complete second majors in other fields of interest, such as theater, graphic arts, film making, psychology, languages, and the social sciences.
Students majoring in other disciplines may take Creative Writing as a minor.
