Faculty Development and Participation Grants for Educational Technology and Global Learning Conferences
Many faculty members at Fairleigh Dickinson have begun to integrate global learning and educational technologies into their classes. In order to recognize and support such efforts, the Office of Interdisciplinary, Distributed, and Global Learning, and the Office of Educational Technology, have reallocated budget lines to create an annual fund of $15,000 to support faculty who wish to make presentations at or attend conferences pertaining to global learning or educational technology (including online learning).
Faculty who make presentations pertaining to either global learning or educational technology at conferences with such a focus may apply to receive up to $1,000 towards their expenses for national and regional conferences and up to $1,500 for international conferences. This includes activities such as presenting a scholarly paper, participating as a panel discussant, presenting a poster, or facilitating a round-table discussion. We will also reimburse faculty who make presentations at disciplinary or interdisciplinary conferences, if the presentation focuses on educational technology or global learning. Funds may be reimbursed for conference fees, travel, lodging, ground transportation, and meals on a per diem basis. Support can be offered for up to two faculty authors per presentation.
Faculty who wish to engage in faculty development opportunities through attending conferences pertaining to the pedagogy (ie., direct class application) of global learning or educational technologies may apply to receive up to $500 for national and regional conferences and up to $1,000 for international conferences. Again, these funds may be applied to conference fees, travel, lodging, ground transportation, and meals.
Because the pool of funds is limited, we have instituted an application process. Please indicate by August 1, 2004 your intent to apply for funds (for conferences to be held before June 30, 2005 ). While failure to respond by August 1 will not exempt you from applying, we will set aside funds on a first-come, first-served basis, and those who indicate their intent to apply by August 1 will have a greater likelihood of receiving support. [We will, however, reserve a small portion of the funds for notification of intent to apply given later in the year, recognizing that some faculty may not be aware of certain conference opportunities as of yet]. You may indicate your intent to apply, either by August 1 or at any point in the year, by sending an e-mail or memo with the name, date, and location of the conference, proposed title of your presentation, if relevant, as well as the mode of participation, to:

Applications can be submitted at any point throughout the year, although applicants are encouraged to indicate their intent to apply prior to submitting a completed application. Applications should be submitted only upon receipt of an official call for papers or call for participation for the conference. Once you have received this information, you will be asked to submit the following as part of an application package:
- Nature of request (make a presentation or attend a conference) and title of presentation, if applicable
- Name of conference with conference URL – we will use this to determine whether the nature of the conference corresponds with the intent of this grant program
- If presentation, evidence that you have submitted your paper (we will also require evidence of acceptance once this is received)
- If your presentation is at a disciplinary conference rather than an educational technology or global learning conference, you will need to submit a copy of your paper/abstract or slides so that we may determine whether the nature of your talk corresponds with the intent of this grant program
- Estimated budget
Please note that requests for reimbursement for any conference will not be honored unless the application is received at least one month prior to the conference date. Also please note that a faculty member may apply for support for more than one conference, but can only receive up to $1500 total per fiscal year from this program. This program applies only to full-time faculty.
