The Literary Review (TLR), published quarterly by Fairleigh Dickinson University, again received this special grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for $10,000. TLR, now in its 50th year, has introduced new fiction, poetry and essays from many nations, regions and languages to English-speaking readers. With funds from this grant, TLR is promoting three readings that feature important writers who were published in previous issues. The readings, part of the 50th anniversary celebration of The Literary Review, are being held in New York City and at the College at Florham campus. The first reading in August by Lydia Davis, who read from her new story collection, Varieties of Disturbance, was held at the College of Florham. Ms. Davis answered questions from a large audience; the reading was well-attended by members of the community.
Russell Banks, twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and currently the New York State author, was the featured reader in September at Housing Works, a not-for-profit bookstore and venue that supports homeless HIV and AIDS victims with housing and community services. Mr. Banks read from his forthcoming novel, The Reserve, and was interviewed about his career as a professional writer by Walter Cummins and Rene Steinke. The Literary Review published his first story, “September,” in 1970.
A final reading was held in October 2007. Four authors (Shelley Jackson, Samantha Hunt, Dennis Nurkse, and Matthew Lippman) featured in recent TLR issues who have new books being published read at Housing Works.
TLR publishes 2,000 copies quarterly with approximately 1,000 copies distributed to subscribers and bookstores; a substantial number are donated to libraries, prisons, and hospitals. Walter Cummins, Editor-in-Chief, is Project Director for this grant. The grant will end in May 2008. This is the second CAREC award received by The Literary Review.
Becton College has received its first National Science Foundation grant. Patricia Melloy, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences, applied for a Major Research Instrumentation grant in early January. The two-year award, which began in September 2007, is for the full requested amount of $99,687. Grant funds will be used to purchase a fluorescence microscopy system that will benefit the undergraduate researchers trained to use it. This state-of-the-art equipment is usually found at major academic research centers and in industry and is essential to performing demonstrations and research in current biochemistry. Co-Principal Investigators on this grant are Eric Iannacone, Assistant Professor of Biological and Allied Health Sciences, and Michael Avaltroni, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, at Becton College. These faculty will use the equipment to enhance their own research as well.Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship FY08 - US Department of Health and Human Services/Health Resources and Services Administration
Dr. Elizabeth Parietti is the Project Director for this grant, which was awarded through the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program (AENT). For FY08, funding in the amount of $47,524 will help advanced practice nurses who meet the health needs of the diverse and underserved populations of New Jersey. Eligible students can be enrolled full or part-time in the RN-BSN-MSN program, the MSN program or the newly created Doctorate in Nursing Program at FDU. The one-year grant will end in June 2008.
Since 2003, the School of Nursing has received an annual award to provide tuition assistance to underserved nursing students through the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) grant. There is a well-documented national and state-wide nursing shortage because of the increasing demand for healthcare as baby boomers age. Intensifying the nursing shortage is the disproportionate number of culturally diverse nurses available to care for the increasing diverse population in the U.S. This year, $13,746 was awarded to FDU for disadvantaged undergraduate nursing students. Nursing students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible for these scholarship funds. Dr. Minerva Guttman will manage the grant which began in July 2007 and will end in June 2008.
