INSIDE GREAT BUSINESS MINDS:
Speaker: Paul Orfalea

Wednesday, June 8, 2005
5:30 pm

The Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies is pleased to host the 2005 "Inside Great Business Minds" educational series, an in-depth dialogue with successful entrepreneurs. Local business owners, presidents, CEOs or managing partners of companies with 10 or more employees are invited to attend the evening event, which will be conducted in a Q & A discussion format similar to the one used on the popular television show "Inside the Actors Studio."

The speaker for this event is Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinko's. With a single copying machine, a $5,000 loan, and an unfailing vision, Paul Orfalea built Kinko's from a one-man operation in a converted hamburger stand into a corporate powerhouse with over 1,200 branches worldwide and 23,000 co-workers. His rise through the business world was sparked by a belief in the power of entrepreneurship and a strong commitment to customer relationships and corporate responsibility.

Paul's story is also testimony to the strength of the American Dream. A chronically struggling student, he spent his school years frustrated by severe dyslexia and educational challenges.

Paul Orfalea FULL

Paul now strives to improve resources for the next generation through his family's philanthropic efforts and public speaking on early care and education, intergenerational programs and learning differences.

Paul will share his inspiring road to success, provide an indispensable model of corporate leadership and illustrate how, in today's technologically-driven economy, putting people first is still the key to winning customer loyalty and maintaining co-worker productivity.

Monday, May 16, 2005
8:30 am - 4:00 pm

An elevator pitch is a short presentation made by an entrepreneur raising money for a venture. The term describes a pitch that's short enough that it could be given during an elevator ride when the entrepreneur has the only chance to talk with a potential investor. Just as in the real Olympics, the investor judges hold up their scores and give points ranging from one to ten in the categories of quality of presentation and business fundability.

Pitch Your Company to:

  • Frederick J. Beste, III, President & CEO, Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds
  • Virginia Breen, Partner, Sienna Ventures
  • Charles W. Crockett, Partner, Ascend Venture Group LLC
  • Edwin A. Goodman, Partner, Milestone Venture Partners
  • Chris Saxman, Executive Director, New York Angels

You could win VANJ's Elevator Pitch Olympics "Gold Medal" Award, which lets investors know that your pitch is worth listening to. Take advantage of this opportunity to give your pitch and a two-page Executive Summary of your business plan to venture capital firms and angel investors. Network with early stage startup companies, professional service providers, entrepreneurs and corporate licensing and strategic partnering executives.

The day begins at 8:30 AM with a workshop on "Launching & Growing A Business In New Jersey." At 10:00 AM the exhibit hall opens and as many as 40 companies that are seeking capital showcase their companies. At noon the luncheon program begins with our investor panel that focuses on the best ways for early stage companies to attract growth capital from angel or venture capital investors. The day's luncheon program ends with the Elevator Pitch Olympics from 1:30 - 3:00 PM. The exhibits will open up again at 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM for further networking.
