Florham Scholars in Business

College at Florham, Madison, NJ

A Special Residential and Academic Program for Full-Time Freshmen Students

Students in the new Florham Scholars in Business program are highly motivated and desire to enrich their academic foundation with grounding in the world of business.Through living together, small classes, internships, facilitated dialog and case studies, company visits, and discussion with global business leaders, students will develop the skills needed to succeed in the global business arena and in their future business studies. By working closely with faculty in small enriched classes, students in the Florham Scholars in Business Program will develop effective writing, oral presentation and group leadership skills that will serve them long after they graduate. Our program is designed to foster engaged, effective and ethical business leaders with a global perspective.

The concept for Florham Scholars in Business was inspired by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s founding mission as an institution that is “of and for the world” and its longstanding initiatives in Servant Leadership. This program is open to incoming freshman enrolled in any academic program. However, the program accepts only a limited number of students from each incoming class.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

During the freshman year, Florham Scholars in Business will live together in a common residence hall and form a cohesive living and learning community that includes small, discussion-driven courses and additional programs such as field work, special lectures, and guest appearances. In the fall semester they will form an independent group or cohort for the Business in a Global Society class and again in the spring for the Freshman Business Forum. The program will include visits to local companies and venues such as the New York Stock Exchange or the United Nations.

The Florham Scholars in Business will also participate in a unique learning experience with community service initiatives that deal with business issues – for example, they could: organize and execute a clothing drive for the Market Street Mission (www.marketstreet.org) in Morristown, an organization that has served the needs of the homeless, helpless and hopeless in Northern New Jersey for over 100 years; help a women’s shelter develop a budget; or help a business run by handicapped people develop a marketing plan. In later years, they could serve as peer-leaders of the Business Leaders of Tomorrow program at the College of Florham.

FDU faculty and speakers from the business community from firms such as Merck, Schering-Plough, J&J, Becton Dickinson, Novartis, Honeywell, and Pfizer will be invited to speak on current business and global societal issues such as the reimportation of drugs from Canada, homeland security, healthcare, new Medicare Prescription Drug Bill, faith-based initiatives, business outsourcing, quality, or business ethics in a post-Enron era.

In keeping with Fairleigh Dickinson University’s mission to support global learning, distance learning will be utilized as appropriate. The program is designed in conjunction with the Silberman College of Business strategic planning initiative which emphasizes a Global Perspective, High-Performance Teams, Engaged Learning, and Usable

Knowledge as required for the Sustainable Enterprise of the 21st Century

Florham Scholars in Business students are encouraged to participate in an optional experiential learning internship experience during their first year Winter Intersession. This might entail “shadowing” a business representative in a field of interest, a session at Wroxton College in England, or participating in a new collaborative initiative with the World Health Organization in New York City and Geneva that is being organized through the Center for Healthcare Management Studies.Students will document their experience and receive one credit for participating.
