As many of you recall, alumnus and Board of Trustees member Greg Olsen made history in the fall when he became just the third private citizen to journey to outer space and visit the International Space Station. A tremendously successful scientist and entrepreneur, Greg has often told me of his gratitude to the University and the people who prepared him for his career. To express his gratitude and appreciation for all that FDU has done for him, Greg has chosen to make a $5 million donation to the University, the largest gift in our 63-year history.
What makes this gift so special is not only the amount, but the fact that Greg has chosen to honor two former University professors with his generosity. In recognition of his gift and at Greg’s request, the University will rename the School of Computer Sciences and Engineering in honor of physics professors Lee Gildart and Oswald Haase, two faculty who had an extraordinary impact on this exceptional individual.
We are indebted to Greg for his generosity. And we also are indebted to professors Gildart and Haase and the hundreds of others like them who have worked so devotedly to serve our students. This gift is an important reminder that our efforts play a pivotal and inspirational role in the lives of our students. We will plan a ceremony to celebrate Greg’s gift, and I will announce those details as they become available.
Thank you.
