As we begin a new fiscal year, I am pleased to announce a major donation of $500,000 from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation toward the construction of the new library at the College at Florham. This is the fifth leadership gift of $500,000 or more toward the new library. To date, $4.5 million has been raised for this important project.
This gift continues a strong relationship with the Hearst Foundation, which several years ago endowed the William Randolph Hearst Scholarships at Fairleigh Dickinson University with two $100,000 donations. In recognition of this latest gift, the auditorium in the new library will bear the William Randolph Hearst name. We are particularly grateful to University trustee and FDU alumnus Ron Doerfler, who played a key role in securing this gift.
The Hearst donation continues the extraordinary success of our fundraising efforts over the past 12 months. Although it is too soon to give an exact figure, private donations and commitments to the University have exceeded $9 million and we are poised to publicly launch the largest capital campaign in our history. I am grateful to all faculty, staff, students, parents, trustees and friends who have partnered with the outstanding team in the Office of University Advancement to achieve such wonderful success in fund raising.
