This highly interactive session provided an overview of a recent study by Hudson Gain Corporation on The Role of the Chief Sustainability Officer in Corporations, as well as a panel discussion with executives who were interviewed in the study and who lead Sustainability efforts in their companies. Participants will engage with panel members, study authors and faculty from the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise (ISE) at Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in table discussions around such topics as:

·         What challenges does a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) face in this economy?

·         How can a CSO help your organization thrive in these tough times?

·         Is this a good time to hire or appoint a CSO?

·         Should you promote a CSO from within—or recruit from the outside?

·         Whether you “build” or “buy” a CSO, what are the roles, requirements and criteria?

·         How does today’s economy impact how you structure and lead Sustainability?

·         If Sustainability is “everyone’s job,” is there a need for a staff/function as well?

Panel Members, also interviewed in the Hudson Gain CSO study, included:

  • Dawn Rittenhouse, Director of Sustainability Development, DuPont (Nominated by peers in the CSO Study as one of the Top Sustainability Professionals, and profiled in the CSO Study)
  • Maureen Adams, Harrah's Eastern Division President, Harrah’s Entertainment
  • Michael Deane, Vice President, Chief Sustainability Officer, Turner Construction
  • Paul King, Vice President, Sustainability Executive, Bovis Lend Lease
  • William Lashbrook, Senior Vice President, PNC Real Estate Finance, PNC
  • Andrew Van Der Laan, Director, Publishing Operations Projects Group, Random House

As the business world wakes up to environmental issues, organizations are realizing that green initiatives can both do good and also boost company profits. This leaves a number of unanswered questions, including:

What can business leaders do—what are they doing, regardless of their position or company?

  • How can you learn from successful companies that have implemented sustainability strategies with varying success?
  • How can companies integrate social, environmental and economic factors for their short and long-term prosperity?
  • What can we learn from the most sustainable companies about generating and regenerating natural, social, human, manufactured and financial capital?
  • How do you distinguish between sustainability initiatives that are real and provide a true, triple bottom-line impact vs. initiatives designed to make the company look good without the material actions that result in actually reducing their environmental footprint?
  • This Webcast explores how smart companies are using environmental strategies to innovate, create value and build competitive advantage.

Attend to learn about:

  • How environmental pressures such as climate change, as well as powerful stakeholders, are all driving companies to go green
  • Describe the strategies and tools the world's best companies use to innovate and profit in this new, environmentally-sensitive world
  • Provide a perspective on the AMA’s Top 12 Most Commonly Used Sustainability-Related Practices
  • Illuminate the hurdles companies face when trying to go green and why many environmental initiatives can fail

The first topic in the "Changing Workforce" series, the presentation of which was held on October 11th, was “The Maturing Workforce.”   The fastest growing segment of the workforce is thosHRRdTbleOct06Pic LOGOe aged 55-64; workers aged 50 and older will comprise the largest proportion of the workforce during the next 25 years, with fewer younger workers than ever before.  Experts are forecasting huge labor shortages. According to an Accenture study, “It appears that the needs of the workforce and the available pool of talent are not on the same course . . . organizations should be moving in the direction of recruiting . . . and retaining older workers.  However, this does not appear to be the situation.”

On December 7th, the second topic in the "Changing Workforce" series, “Tacit Knowledge and the Maturing Workforce", was presented.  Many industries are deeply concerned about and challenged by the exiting of tacit knowledge, especially technical knowledge, as droves of mature workers leave their companies.  This session explored best practices, case studies, and provided an action focus, as all participants actively and collaboratively proposed solutions to the identified challenges–and took home REAL solutions.

The third topic in the series, presented on February 8th, was “The Intergenerational Workforce—What are the Implications and How do we Leverage Them?”.  Most organizations today are faced with the reality of a rapidly changing workforce, one characterized by multiple generations working side by side. This rapidly changing landscape presents not only challenges but opportunities for embracing and honoring the differences, as well as finding and leveraging the common ground. This session explored the issues, the opportunities, the realities and “myths,” and the implications of the Intergenerational Workforce.  We used discussion and case studies to provide an action focus for all participants to collaborate and generate ideas and solutions.

The fourth topic in the series on the “Changing Workforce” HR roundtable series,  “Globalizing One of the Most Sustainable Companies in the World", was presented on April 12th.  Bank of America is already recognized as one of the world’s most sustainable companies.  This is based primarily on how they conduct their business in North America.  Now, they are engaged in an exciting opportunity — going global.  As for many of you, the world is getting smaller and smaller.  Our markets and available workforce are frequently somewhere other than North America.  At this session we will use the Bank of America experience as the basis for our discussion and exploration of how to go global sustainably.  This session will explore the opportunities and challenges as well as best and promising practices.  We used the readings and the Bank of America case study as a way to engage all of the participants and collaborate in the generation of new ideas and solutions.
