President’s Update – Federal Support Grows – January 30, 2008

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Last month, I told you that Fairleigh Dickinson received $750,000 in federal funding for our National Guard Global Education program. To add to the great news, we have been notified that the Department of Justice has awarded the University $705,000 for the development of new programs to fight cyber crime.

As you know, the University had previously received significant funding from the Department of Justice to construct and equip our state-of-the-art Cyber Crime Training Lab at the Metropolitan Campus. The University has developed specialized training for law enforcement officers to investigate such crimes and earn a graduate certificate in computer security and forensic administration through the School of Administrative Science.

These new funds primarily will be dedicated toward the creation of a Portable Educational Network (PEN) with computer and network equipment that will enable students to test within the laboratory setting the capability of the latest hacking weapons and build defenses against these attacks. Also, new courses will be developed and taught focusing on these elements. In addition, federal funding will be used to further enhance our online offerings for first responders.

I again must thank our representatives who have championed our requests: New Jersey Congressmen Rodney Frelinghuysen and Steve Rothman.

And, of course, we are indebted to the Petrocelli College faculty who, under the leadership of Dean Ken Vehrkens and Executive Associate Dean Ron Calissi, created the programs and established such a strong reputation in the field.

Thank you,
Michael Adams
