M.A. in English and Comparative Literature

Admission Requirements

  1. Students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, with at least 24 credits in English.

  2. Students are advised to develop a reading proficiency in one or more foreign language.

  3. Submission must be made of an official score report for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test taken within the last five years. (The GRE requirement is waived for applicants who have completed a master's degree.)

  4. Three letters of recommendation must be provided.

Applicants who have not completed all requirements for admission to the degree program may be permitted to enroll in classes for credit on a non-matriculated or non-degree basis.

Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree

  • The completion of at least 27 credits from the list of English and comparative literature course offerings. (Students are permitted considerable freedom in choosing courses.)

  • Additionally, under the supervision of a mentor, each MA candidate must write a 3-credit research thesis based on a small body of works (for example, three stories in Canterbury Tales, a handful of poems, several plays) from two different literary periods.

 

M.A. in English Language and Literature at Wroxton, England

The University's Wroxton College offers a graduate program in English language and literature at its campus located in Wroxton, England. Courses are conducted by a full-time resident British tutorial staff and are supplemented by guest lectures by distinguished British scholars. These scholars, who are faculty members at such institutions as University of Liverpool, Cambridge University, University of Birmingham, King's College, Oxford University and University of Exeter, are among the world's foremost critics of Elizabethan and Jacobean literature.

This master's program in England is conducted only during Wroxton College's annual summer session. The graduate program in English language and literature at Wroxton College is flexible to the extent that a graduate student may study one or more summer sessions in England and subsequently complete the graduate degree requirements at the University's School of Communication Arts at the Metropolitan Campus in New Jersey. Students have the alternative option of studying summers only at Wroxton College in England to complete the graduate degree requirements for a Master of Arts with a major in English language and literature.
