Dear Members of the University Community,
As we all know, an earthquake and tsunami waves recently claimed the lives of thousands in Southern Asia and Africa and plunged countless others into ruin and misery. The magnitude of the disaster is truly horrific, and we are once again reminded of the fragile and interconnected nature of humanity. I know many in the United States are doing what they can to support and contribute to the relief efforts. I hope you will join these efforts.
At Fairleigh Dickinson University, we are especially concerned for our approximately 500 international students who come from the countries directly affected by this tragedy. Our Office of International Student Services has been reaching out to students from these areas and, thus far, thankfully, we know of no FDU student who was directly injured. There are still students, though, who we have not yet been able to contact and so we continue to be very worried about them and their families.
We do anticipate that the impact of the crisis could impair several students’ ability to continue their studies in the United States. Our provosts, administrators, counselors and international students support staff have met to discuss the varied needs these students will have as they attempt to continue their educational pursuits. Some students may not be able to get money because of the closing of banks. Some may require a leave of absence to tend to relief efforts or other particular needs. In all cases, we will provide whatever assistance, allowances and remedies possible.
Finally, I would like to add that our Wellness Centers are available to faculty, staff or students who need support at this very stressful time. Stress management and personal counseling are available for faculty, staff and students. If you wish to discuss any issues or know of someone who could benefit from such assistance, please call 201-692-2174 (Metropolitan Campus) or 973-443-8535 (College at Florham).
Our deepest sympathies go out to all of those impacted by this disaster.
Sincerely
Michael Adams
