M.A. in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL)

The MA in TESL/TEFL, offered through the University's Peter Sammartino School of Education, gives you the opportunity to explore:

ABOUT THE CURRICULUM

This degree is designed for (a) international students who want to teach English outside of the United States; and (b) domestic students (i.e., US citizens and legal residents) who desire a masters degree to teach English as a second language but do not wish to pursue New Jersey K-12 teacher certification. This program is offered under the auspices of the Peter Sammartino School of Education, University College: Arts / Sciences / Professional Studies, Metropolitan Campus, Teaneck, New Jersey, USA.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The program requires completion of 33 credits of which 18 credits are required courses; 4 credits of optional clinical experience; 9-12 credits of electives; and 2-3 credits of either final project or masters seminar. Curricular details are listed below.

Where are the courses offered?

Courses are offered at the University's Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, NJ.

If I have taken graduate credits at FDU or at another institution, can they be applied to the MA in TESL/TEFL?

A total of 9 credits with a grade of B or better may be applied if they are relevant to your individual course of study and if they are taken no more than 5 years prior to admission to the MA in TESL/TEFL.

What if I am interested only in 18-credit New Jersey state teacher certification or 18-credit ESL Specialist FDU Certificate?

You may take the 18-credit NJ state teacher certification or ESL specialist FDU certificate without t obligation to complete the MA degree.

What if I am not a certified teacher and do not seek NJ state teacher certification?

If you have a BA degree with a major in a foreign language or in English, you may be accepted after an interview with the coordinator of the program.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

International Students:

  1. A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.

  2. TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or better.

  3. Two letters of recommendation.

Domestic Students
