Distance Learning

As of the fall 2001 semester, all undergraduate students are required to take one online course for every 32 credits of study. The reasons for this requirement are twofold:

(1) The University views the Internet as a fundamental learning, communication, research and collaboration tool with which every graduating student should have a high level of facility for a lifetime of job and educational success and

(2) In furtherance of the University’s global education mission, the online format provides a means for integration of global information resources and the participation of faculty members from around the world (our Global Virtual Faculty™) as teaching partners with our local, on-site faculty.

The first year online requirement is CORE1006 The Global Challenge. Further courses are College- and then discipline based. Distance-learning courses that fulfill the requirement may be offered fully online or in a blended format (online with some in-class sessions). All distance learning (online) courses are designated in the semester rosters with a B (blended) or D (fully online) next to the section number. Please see Coursefinder for a list of some of the hundreds of courses that have sections meeting the Distance Learning requirement.

Students entering Fairleigh Dickinson University with no prior college credits must take four distance-learning courses, while those entering with prior transferable credits must take distance-learning courses according to the following schedule:

a) Entering/reentering with 1 to 16 credits—four distance-learning courses

b) Entering/reentering with 17 to 48 credits—three distance-learning courses

c) Entering/reentering with 49 to 80 credits—two distance-learning courses

d) Entering/reentering with 81 credits or more—one distance-learning course.

In all instances, students will register for CORE1006 The Global Challenge, as their first distance-learning requirement.

To take any online course, students must have an active FDU Webmail account prior to the beginning of the semester. Without a Webmail account, participation in these courses is impossible. Webmail accounts can be obtained online by going to http://webmail.fdu.edu/ and following the step-by-step instructions.

To find out more information about online courses, students should contact their college dean or department chair / director. Questions regarding the online delivery should be directed to the Office of Educational Technology at oet@fdu.edu.

In addition, general information about online programs can be found at http://globaleducation.edu.
