Italian
ITAL 1001.31      Beginning Italian I

A course designed for students with little or no knowledge of Italian. It provides an introduction to basic oral expression, listening comprehension, and elementary reading and writing.
Students master: greetings, basic everyday vocabulary (800 words approximately), most common adjectives (descriptive, possessive, demonstrative), the present tense of regular verbs, the most common templates for the present tense of irregular verbs, direct object pronouns, and the basic structure of phrases
The course covers the first third of the textbook Ciao! (6 chapters). Conducted entirely in Italian.

A course designed for students who can demonstrate to have a basic knowledge of the structure of Italian phrases, and basic oral and written skills in the present tense.
Students master: more basic vocabulary, three past tenses (passato prossimo, imperfetto, trapassato prossimo), the future tense, the imperative, indirect and double pronouns, reflexive pronouns/verbs, agreement of pronouns and past participles in composite past tenses. Greater emphasis is given to oral expression.
The course covers the second third of the textbook Ciao! (6 chapters). Conducted entirely in Italian.

ITAL   2004.31    Italian Conversation

A course designed for students who have mastered the basics of Italian and are ready for more practice, conversation, and real-life situations. A portion of the course is devoted to grammar review and to learning more sophisticated modes of expression (specifically, conditional tenses, hypothetical clauses, and the use of the subjunctive in Italian). Music, film, literature, newspaper articles, and fumetti (graphic novels) will all be used to achieve the course's goals. There is no textbook. Conducted entirely in Italian.

A course designed for students who can demonstrate to have a basic knowledge of the structure of French phrases, and basic oral and written skills in the present tense.
Students master: more basic vocabulary, two past tenses (imperfect, passé composé), the future tense, the imperative, indirect and double pronouns, reflexive pronouns/verbs, agreement of pronouns and past participles in composite past tenses. Greater emphasis is given to oral expression.
The course covers the second third of the textbook Espaces! (5 chapters). Conducted entirely in French.

French 2003.31        French Conversation

A course designed for students who have mastered the basics of French and are ready for more practice, conversation, and real-life situations. A portion of the course is devoted to grammar review and to learning more sophisticated modes of expression (specifically, conditional tenses, hypothetical clauses, and the use of the subjunctive in French). The course covers 5 chapters of the textbook Imaginez, a very exciting new text that uses short French films presented at international festivals as a tool to review grammar and stimulate discussion of contemporary topics. Conducted entirely in French.

Japanese
JAPN 1001.31    Beginning Japanese I

This class teaches basic Japanese writing system (Hiragana & Katakana with Kanji optional) and speaking and listening skills, based on the grammar students learn in the class.  It also teaches the basic grammar they can use for every day conversation.  By learning the Japanese language, the students can also review the basics of any grammar.  They will also learn the effective and organized way to study a language.  Strong build-up of vocabulary is encouraged through the course.  The class also includes some lectures on Japanese culture.

JAPN  1002.31  Beginning Japanese II

This class is the continuation of JAPN 1001 Beginning Japanese I.  After the students master the basic writing system, the class is conducted using Japanese writing only.  Students learn more advanced grammar they can use for the more complex conversation.  As the final project, students write an essay in Japanese and recite it in the class.

his class develops the basic knowledge students have acquired in Beginning Japanese I & II into the skill they can use for more advanced situations.  Learning more advanced grammar, students focus on acquiring the ability of writing a composition.  They will also learn to give a speech, using the best of their knowledge they have learned through the sequence of courses.
