President’s Update – Giant Steps for 9/11 – August 18, 2009

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I’m sure many of you recall the inspiring effort of FDU alumnus George Martin, who walked across the United States in 2007-08 to raise money for 9/11 rescue and recovery workers who became ill as a result of their service at Ground Zero. George’s initiative has raised nearly $3 million for this important cause and he’s now set to embark on another quest for these afflicted workers. On Sunday, September 13, George will walk 13 miles from the George Washington Bridge in New York to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., where he will participate in a tailgate party and take a pre-game walk prior to the start of the Giants’ home opener against the Washington Redskins.

On this trek, George will be joined by several of his former Giants teammates and NFL alumni, 9/11 workers, police and firefighters and other supporters. Among those supporters will be our very own Kenneth Vehrkens, dean of Petrocelli College. Ken and George are long-time friends and Ken is a member of the Journey for 9/11 Board of Directors. Ken actually walked alongside George in New Mexico during his nationwide walk and many members of the University community made a personal contribution during that trip. We now have another opportunity to lend our support.

To register for the walk or make a donation, go to www.ajourneyfor911.info. Those interested in helping this critical initiative also can make checks out to “A Journey for 9/11” and mail them to Denise Wisniewski, H-DH1-02, Fairleigh Dickinson University, 1000 River Road, Teaneck, N.J. 07666 by Thursday, September 10, 2009.

Thank you,
Michael Adams
