FDU’s mathematics department, under the aegis of Dr. Peter Astor, submitted a proposal in 2002 asking the National Science Foundation fund scholarships for its mathematics majors, later extended to include computer science and electrical engineering undergraduates. The proposal, “Undergraduate Scholarships in Mathematics: A Workforce Development Program,” recommended a new academic concentration in pharmaceutical biostatistics.
NSF awarded FDU a grant of up to $400,000 to fund scholarship awards for full time undergraduate students who are U.S. residents, demonstrate financial need, and satisfy GPA requirements. Awards are up to $3125 per year. In addition to taking courses in the statistical concentration, students agree to participate in thirty hours of community service a year.
Dr. Seonja Kim served as co-Principal Investigator until May 2007. Dr. Gertrude Levine replaced Dr. Astor as Principal Investigator for the NSF grant from the summer of 2005 to the present.
