Thinking Skills Institute/Test Preparation

  Mind Power Seminars
Test Prep: GMAT, GRE, SAT, LSAT, PRAXIS

The mission of the Thinking Skills Institute is to present programs whose purpose is to help students of all ages make the most of their thinking abilities in a variety of practical content areas. Our courses are distinguished by a number of special features. First, each course begins with an introduction to basic mind self-management methods for focusing your thinking on the important issues of the course material, so that you may maximize your benefits from the course.

Second, each course uses our Personal Trainer method of individualized instruction to sharpen the skills taught in that course. This unique training is like athletic coaching for the mind: you get individual help at the moment you need it while you are working on practice materials. We precisely diagnose any weaknesses in your approach and help you to fix them yourself “on the spot.”

Third, we include test sections from national entrance examinations, such as the SAT, GMAT, LSAT, GRE, and MCAT, in our training materials. This means that you will be working with state-of-the-art reading and reasoning questions as you train. It also means a bonus for anyone contemplating taking any of these tests: as you train, you are also preparing for the test!

Fourth, our university affiliation betokens a strong commitment to academic excellence. For example, our instructors all have advanced degrees, extensive teaching experience, and expertise in both subject matter and in our special training methods.

MindPower™: Making the Most of Your Thinking Abilities

Do you ever lose concentration under pressure? Get distracted by irrelevancies? Forget crucial material when you need it? Find it hard to stay focused while performing difficult tasks? Have trouble comprehending or retaining dense written material? Feel swamped by information? Become blocked while solving a problem? Need something to jump-start your creative engine? Have difficulty finding the right words to communicate your ideas? Let opponents win arguments when you know they should not?

When you face such challenges, doing your best is not automatic. You may be using only a small fraction of your full thinking potential. The key to making the most of your abilities in these and other circumstances is mind self-management: focusing your thinking effectively on the important issues of the situation. And this master skill is the unique focus of the MindPower™ seminar. MindPower™ teaches you three fundamental mind self-management principles (the when, the what, and the how of focusing on the key issues) and shows you how to use them to activate more of your untapped potential whenever you need it — on the job, at school, or in everyday living.

At the end of this seminar, you will be able to:

• Get to the heart of the matter by asking yourself (and others) the right specific questions.

• Develop the mental flexibility needed for continuing thinking-skill improvement and for successfully meeting new and unfamiliar situations.

• Get back into focus when your mind is stuck, wandering, or overloaded.

• Read your own mind, so that you can shift your thinking into a more powerful gear as needed.

• Determine what to do when you don’t know what to do when trying to solve difficult problems.

• Uncover hidden flaws in arguments and proposals.

• Use more of what you know when you need it for comprehension and retention, problem-solving, task performance, test-taking, decision analysis, communication, and intellectual self-defense.

Sexton Educational Programs, recognized leaders in test preparation in the United States, are owned by Fairleigh Dickinson University. This is the only university-based program of its kind.

Sexton’s review courses for the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are offered in two formats. Choose from a 32-hour program (meeting for eight four-hour sessions) or a 16-hour program (meeting for two eight-hour days over a weekend). The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) course is offered in a 30-hour format and the PRAXIS General Knowledge Test course is offered in a 16-hour format.

These programs do more than simply review old test problems. Classes concentrate on the practical intellectual skills needed for achieving a good test score on a standardized test. You are shown effective approaches to exam taking, from time-saving and problem-solving techniques to methods for using the test structure to your best advantage.

Extensive practice materials, including actual past exam questions, are provided to sharpen the skills you’ll learn in class. Our courses provide comprehensive test training. In our Personal Trainer in-class practice sessions we make sure that you can properly apply the methods we teach. This unique training is like athletic coaching for the mind: you get individual help at the moment you need it while you are practicing with actual test items.

Our “thinking-aloud” methods enable us to diagnose precisely any weaknesses in your approach and help you fix them yourself on the spot. All classes are team-taught by a distinguished faculty of professionals, educators and test preparation experts.

Most importantly, all programs are backed by the Sexton guarantee: If you’re dissatisfied with your test score after taking our course, you can repeat the preparation course, at no additional cost, up to one full year after your first class.
